Overdraft Protection

Sometimes your account balance just doesn't add up. Don't let that get you down.

You have a lot of expenses. Your pay doesn't always arrive when you think it should. We understand that those and other factors could cause a negative balance in your checking account.

There's no reason for you to pay high returned-check charges to merchants in Michigan and elsewhere. Instead, you can arrange for Arbor Financial to cover your overdrafts in one of several ways.

  • Your checking account automatically covers checks and other transactions made using your account number
  • Also covered are automatic electronic bill payments
  • You'll be charged a $35 fee for each overdraft we pay*
  • ATM transactions and regular debit card transactions are not automatically covered
  • You can authorize coverage for ATM transactions and everyday debit card transactions by completing this form, visiting any of our branches, or calling 269.375.6702

Overdraft Protection Options

Adding one of these services can reduce overdraft charges.

  • Link to Savings Account: Money is transferred from your savings account to match the amount of your checking overdraft. The charge is $5 for each overdraft. There are no limits on transactions.
  • Flex Line of Credit Transfers: Money is transferred from your line of credit to match your overdraft amount. There is a $5 charge for each transaction, plus interest charges on your credit line.
  • Courtesy Coverage: Coverage is available for members who qualify. This limited service includes checks and automated electronic bill payments, but not ATM and everyday debit card transactions. A fee applies each time you use this service.
  • Courtesy Coverage Plus: Coverage is available to qualifying members. This comprehensive version covers checks, automated bill payments, everyday debit card use and ATM transactions. A fee applies each time you use this service.

Tips to Avoid Overdrafts

  1. Keep track of your account balance: Make sure you know your account balance at all times and keep track of your transactions. You can check your balance online, through our mobile app, or by calling our membership services team at (269) 375-6702.
  2. Set up account alerts: Set up alerts for low balances, deposits, and transactions. This will help you stay informed about your account activity and avoid overdrafts.
  3. Create a budget: Creating a budget can help you manage your money more effectively and avoid overspending. For help creating a budget visit our partner Green Path
  4. Use automatic payments with BillPay: Set up automatic payments for bills and recurring expenses to avoid forgetting to make a payment.

* Accounts will be charged the standard overdraft fee of $35 for handling each overdraft created by check, ACH, point-of-sale, ATM withdrawal, in-person withdrawal, or other electronic item that is paid, and $35 for items returned. We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. Any overdraft must be repaid within 30 days.

Please note that we use your available balance to determine whether sufficient funds are available when transactions attempt to clear the account and for determining whether to charge an overdraft or returned item fee.
